The Middle Eastern Studies / Arabic (MESA) major combines Arabic language study with knowledge of the Middle East. You will gain a strong background in modern Middle Eastern history, politics, geography, and culture, study abroad in BYU’s advanced Arabic language program (with an emphasis in reading fluency, listening skills, and speaking an Arabic dialect), develop research skills, and acquire an appreciation for the current challenges in the Middle East today.
The University of Michigan has had an excellent program in Arabic for many years. The Arabic program at the University of Michigan leads to a degree in Arabic literature and linguistics of the medieval and contemporary periods. They also offer undergraduate programs in Near Eastern studies, Islamic studies, and Ancient Eygpt. MESA Graduate Student Opportunities The Middle East Studies Association hosts a conference every year to bring together scholars, educators and those interested in the Middle East. MESA’s Board of Directors has established a modest fund to help subsidize travel expenses for some graduate students. This is a great opportunity for students currently studying Arabic to meet fellow students and future colleagues.
